Brooklynite Debbie Gibson: a pop star that isn’t going to age or slow down

Singer Debbie Gibson began working in show business at a rather young age. She wrote her first song at the age of five. This allowed her to become a teenage pop star. It all happened in the late 1980s. Among the most popular hits of the young star were Only in My Dreams, Shake Your Love and Foolish Beat. Some concern for her parents was added by the fact that the girl did not even finish high school. However, Debbie, having celebrated the release of her first album, decided to go on a creative sabbatical. Taking a break from music, she began to look for work on the stage. When she found it and began taking part in plays, she received high praise from the audience and critics. Read more about the work of this sexy blonde and her life on brooklynski.info.

Childhood of the future star

The future star was born in Brooklyn on August 31, 1970. She grew up in Merrick. As a child, she studied piano from Morton Estrin. Deborah was five years old at the time. The girl very quickly proved her talent.

The first song she performed was called Make Sure You Know Your Classroom. The peculiarity of the composition is that the girl wrote it herself. Moreover, in the fifth grade, Debbie managed to write an opera. This musical work was called Alice in Operaland. The author recalls that the main hero was meant to meet characters from famous operas.

In addition, Debbie began performing on stage at the age of five. When she turned eight, she joined the children’s choir at the famous New York Metropolitan Opera.

Despite her tight schedule, to which she doomed herself as a singer-songwriter and actress, Debbie found time to enjoy the ordinary and simple joys of her age. She never felt that her childhood had been stolen from her. She simply held on to everything she could.

The girl built a studio in the garage and began to write and record music. When she won $1,000 in a contest at age 12, her parents realized that their daughter’s talents could be turned into a successful career.

They hired Doug Breibart to teach the girl how to arrange, compose and produce music. By 1985, when she was 15, she had recorded over 100 songs.

The top charts

A musical prodigy, Deborah burst onto the Billboard Pop charts when she was only 16. This breakthrough was all the more significant because she did it with the song she wrote herself, Only in My Dreams. The newly-emerged pop princess became the youngest one to create and perform a hit, Foolish Beat. For this, she was put in the Guinness World Records. She is still the youngest woman to hold this record and has sold over 16 million albums all over the world.

Having conquered the pop world, the girl decided her pop mission was accomplished. She started to work in the theater, namely in musicals. She left her deep mark in the production of Les Misérables, playing the role of Eponine. Thanks to her, box office records were broken in the production of Grease.

She appeared on tours across the United States in such productions as Grease and Funny Girl. She also impressed critics with her performances as Belle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and Gypsy Rose Lee in Gypsy. The famous roles include Cinderella, Velma Kelly in Chicago and Sally Bowles in Cabaret.

In 2016, she wrote, acted as an executive producer and starred in the film Summer of Dreams. The film featured her new song, Wonderland, and a novel acoustic version of Only in My Dreams. It was rated high and watched by 2.5 million viewers.

It was also the best program in terms of TV and streaming ratings that summer. The movie was the most socially original film premiere of the week on both broadcast and cable, garnering more unique views and more engagements on social media platforms combined than any other original film premiere. Deborah also reunited with Robert Hunt to star in the sequel, Wedding of Dreams, in 2018.

Own radio show

In 2019, she launched her Debbie Gibson’s Mixtape on SiriusXM. She performed shows on a successful eponymous tour, visiting 53 cities across North America and selling 600,000 tickets. Debbie joined Ciara and host Nick Lachey as a judge on the original show America’s Most Musical Family.

Her theater career was as bright as her glamorous pop career. Nowadays, she turned to teaching and mentoring. In 2008, she founded Deborah Gibson’s Electric Youth, an arts education camp. Then, she created the Gibson Girl Foundation for underprivileged young people who want to study art.

Despite her age, she still looks quite young. While she’s no longer the blonde-haired teenager who jumps to simple, unpretentious tunes and wears bangs, a leather jacket and a black hat, the woman doesn’t look like a fifty-year-old person.

She visits the town where she grew up regularly. In Merrick, Debbie still remembers her old friends and teachers by name, even though the green paint on the sidewalk outside her house has almost faded. Friends say that when they hear her name, Merrick lights up.

Anniversary of a major hit

Debbie is showing no signs of aging or slowing down. She appeared on the Fox series We Are Family in 2024. At the 12th Annual She Rocks Awards, Debbie was honored with the Trailblazer Award by The Women’s International Music Network.

Deborah is celebrating the 35th anniversary of her hits and first album with an all-new remix of Tracy Young’s Electric Youth Newstalgia and special anniversary shows around the world. From world-famous hits and platinum albums to roles on screen and stage, she has a bright talent and charisma that are timeless.
